PHP version check · Updated 22 October 2026
Check which PHP version your website runs
PHP is the software behind most websites, including WordPress. Every PHP version gets security fixes for a few years, then stops. A site on an old version keeps working, but when a new flaw is found there is nothing to install.
Check your site below, see how to find the version yourself, and check the official support dates. As of today, PHP 8.2 to 8.5 are supported, and 8.1 and older are end of life.
Check a site now
Enter your site, a client's, or any site you are responsible for. It is read from the outside, one host. Checks are not stored, only anonymous totals (a site is kept only if you ask me to email the report or watch it). It looks past the home page for the PHP system underneath: WordPress, WooCommerce, Drupal, Joomla, Magento, Laravel and more.
Look after several sites? Check up to 10 at once.

Six ways to find your PHP version
WordPress
In the WordPress admin, go to Tools, then Site Health, then the Info tab, and open "Server". The PHP version is listed there.
cPanel hosting
Log in to cPanel and open "Select PHP Version" or "MultiPHP Manager". Each domain shows the version it runs.
Plesk hosting
Open Websites & Domains, pick the site, and open "PHP" (PHP Settings). The version is at the top.
Your own server
Our free open-source script prints the version the website actually runs, then deletes itself. On the command line, "php -v" shows the command-line PHP, which can differ from the one serving the site.
Get the free scriptAsk your host
Send one line: "Which PHP version is my website running, and is it a version that still gets security fixes?" A good host answers in one reply.
From the outside
Use the free checker on this page. Many sites show their PHP version in public signals. If yours hides it, pick it by hand for an exact answer.
On PHP 8.1 or older? What to do
- Take a full backup of the files and the database before anything changes.
- Test on a copy. Switch a private copy of the site to PHP 8.3 or 8.4 and click through every page, form and checkout.
- Fix what breaks. Update or replace old plugins and themes, and update custom code that uses removed features.
- Switch the live site and test again, then make sure PHP was restarted so the new version is really serving requests.
Rushing the switch on the live site is how sites go blank or lose their checkout. If you would rather have it done for you, I do PHP upgrades for small business and agency sites, from $350, with a free review and a fixed quote first.
Questions
How do I find out which PHP version my website uses?
On WordPress, go to Tools, Site Health, Info, Server. On cPanel, open Select PHP Version or MultiPHP Manager. On Plesk, open the PHP settings for the site. You can also use the free checker on this page, or ask your host which PHP version the site runs.
Which PHP versions are still supported?
As of 22 October 2026, PHP 8.2, 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5 still receive security fixes. PHP 8.2 security support ends on 31 December 2026. PHP 8.1 reached end of life on 31 December 2025, and 8.0, 7.4 and older are also end of life.
Is PHP 8.1 still safe to use?
No. PHP 8.1 reached end of life on 31 December 2025 and no longer gets security fixes. When a new flaw is found, as with PHP2Shell in October 2026, there is no official update to install. The fix is upgrading to PHP 8.2 or newer.
Will upgrading PHP break my website?
It can. Old themes, plugins and custom code sometimes use features that newer PHP removed, which shows up as a blank page or a broken checkout. The safe way is to take a full backup, test the new version on a copy of the site first, fix what breaks, then switch the live site.
Does updating WordPress update PHP?
No. WordPress, its plugins and its theme run on top of PHP. PHP itself is installed on the server and is updated by your host or whoever manages the server.
Why does my site show a different PHP version than php -v?
A server can have several PHP versions installed. The command line and the website can use different ones, and each site on cPanel or Plesk can pick its own. The version that matters is the one serving your website.
